Dance Auditions

Boston Dance Alliance, an organization dedicated to strengthening the Boston dance community, held open auditions at Brookline High School in Brookline, MA on Sunday, September 20, 2009. About 30 dancers showed up for the 11 AM ballet audition attempting to impress about 15 judges from dance companies throughout the city. Among the 30 dancers was 28-year-old French Clements, a ballet teacher at the Boston Ballet School and the Dance Complex.

Of the approximately 35 dancers that were at the audition, French was the only male. “Sometimes the Boston dance scene seems so insular, Clements said. “Any opportunity to congregate with other dancers helps.”

After working at a desk job for a couple of years, Clements decided to give his dance career a shot and is auditioning for dance roles for the first time since college. “Being a [dance] teacher without any sort of [dance] career, you tend to not get as much respect,” Clements said.

Clements had to rush off to another audition that afternoon. “I don’t want to be one of those 40-year old teachers that says ‘I could have been a contender.’ That may be where I’m headed but I’d rather say I tried,” Clements said.
